Dear CIS Community,

Something to Ponder

The only difference between a hero and the villain is that the villain chooses to use that power in a way that is selfish and hurts other people.” - Chadwick Boseman

Monday 26 January is National Heroes’ Day in the Cayman Islands. National Heroes’ Day is the fourth Monday each January. This is a relatively new holiday in the Cayman Islands, with the year 2003 being the first time it was officially started as part of the 500 year celebration of the Cayman Islands. This year there are celebrations in George Town in Heroes’ Square. National Heroes ‘s Day is part of the National Heroes Law, providing for the declaration of persons who have rendered exceptional service as national heroes in the Cayman Islands.

Often our remembering of heroes may have sights, and sounds that accompany these memories. For some levity, below is my suggested top ten songs about heroes - recognizing that sharing such a list may be controversial, and hopefully might spark some fun conversations in people’s households.

  1. Heroes - David Bowie
  2. We Don’t Need Another Hero - Tina Turner
  3. Juke Box Hero - Foreigner
  4. Superman Song - Crash Test Dummies
  5. Hall of Fame - The Script fet. Will.i.am
  6. Holding Out for a Hero - Bonnie Tyler
  7. Heroes and Friends - Randy Travis
  8. Hero - Enrique Iglesias
  9. She’s Somebody’s Hero - Jamie O’Neal
  10. Batdance - Prince
  11. Hero - Chad Kroger feat. Josie Scott

There are many opportunities around the islands to learn about and celebrate the Beloved Isle Cayman. Aside from national heroes, many children, and adults for that matter may have a person from history, from fiction, from family or from friends who may have been their hero at one point in time. Who knows maybe some of our current students may be somebody’s hero already or will be future heroes.

As we enter the long weekend, one piece of advice from our respective heroes might be to read or perhaps do some movement - hopefully you may find some time on Monday to read, move and acknowledge a hero or your hero.

Sincerely,

Jim
